Sanath Jayasuriya to take over as Melbourne club coach after ICC ban ends
Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the head coach of Melbourne club team Mulgrave. He will assume this responsibility for the 2021-22 season after the end of his ban imposed on him for violating the Anti-Corruption Code of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Interestingly, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Taranga, who played for Sri Lanka with Jayasuriya, are associated with the Victoria Eastern Cricket Association club as players and now Jayasuriya will coach both the players who played with him.
Mulgrave Club wrote in a social media post, “We are thrilled to have Jayasuriya join us. We sincerely hope that Jayasuriya will provide valuable guidance to the senior and young players of the club. Jayasuriya is a legend of Sri Lankan cricket. He has played 110 test matches in which 340 is his best score. Apart from this, he has also played 445 ODIs for Sri Lanka. He was also the Player of the Tournament in the 1996 World Cup and was instrumental in making Sri Lanka the champions.
Club President Malin Pulneyegam said in a statement, “Tillakaratne Dilshan, who played alongside Jayasuriya for Sri Lanka Legends, has helped us immensely in getting him associated with the club. We were in touch with Jayasuriya through Dilshan for some time now. The conversation with him started during the legend series. Dilshan had contributed a lot in this. After that we signed Jayasuriya and today he has officially joined the team.
