The country lost another legendary player, the boxer who won the gold medal in the Asian Games passed away
Former Asian Games medalist and country’s legendary boxer Dinko Singh passed away on Thursday. He was ill for a long time. Dinko Singh was undergoing treatment for liver cancer since 2017. Dinko Singh, 41, from Manipur won the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1998 and Padma Shri in 2013. He is a role model for many star boxers like Mary Kom. Dinko Singh was also found positive from Kovid-19 last year but he returned home from the hospital after recovering. Players like Vijender Singh had raised funds to help with Dinko Singh’s treatment. Apart from these two some other boxers and coaches have formed a WhatsApp group and one lakh rupees will be collected and sent directly to Dingko’s account.
Dinko, who was an inspiration to six-time world champions MC Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi, worked in the Indian Navy and also coached players, although he was forced to stay at home after cancer. Last year, he was airlifted to Delhi for treatment amid Corona.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has expressed grief over the demise of Dinko Singh. He said that I am shocked and saddened by the demise of Dinko Singh. Padma Shri awardee Jinko Singh is one of the most respected sportspersons of the state. May God rest his soul.
Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has expressed condolences on the death of Dingko. Rijiju tweeted that I am deeply saddened by the passing away of Shri Dinko Singh. He was one of the best boxers India has ever produced. Dingko’s gold medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games triggered a boxing chain reaction in India. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
Olympic medalist Vijender Singh has also expressed his condolences on the death of Dingko Singh. He said that I pay tribute to Dinko Singh. His life and his struggle will always inspire generations to come. I pray for his family that may God give them courage in this time of sorrow.
