New rules related to gold hallmarking apply, from today only 14, 18 and 22 carat gold will be available in the market

From today you will get only hallmark gold in the market. Common people will benefit from mandatory hallmarking. The purchased gold will be written on how many carats it is. All jewelers will now be able to sell only 14 carat, 18 carat and 22 carat gold. BIS is running the scheme of gold hallmarking since April 2000. So far, only 40 per cent of jewelery has been hallmarked. The process of registration has been made online and automated for the convenience of jewellers.

What is hallmarking of gold
Hallmark is the proof of purity of gold. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs is the authorized department for hallmarking. So buy gold only after seeing BIS hallmarking.
It is also seen that many jewelers apply hallmarks without completing the investigation process. In such a situation, it is important to see whether the hallmark is original or not. The original hallmark bears the triangular mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Along with this, the purity of gold is also written on it. It also bears the year of manufacture of the jewelery and the logo of the manufacturer.

What will be the benefit
Making hallmarking mandatory will come as a big blow to those jewelers who are selling low carat gold to customers by claiming more carat. After the implementation of hallmarking, it will not be possible to do so. Consumers will get pure gold in the market and they will not be a victim of fraud.
