Allopathy vs Ayurveda: Hearing on Ramdev’s petition on July 5, the court sought the original video of the statement
The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked Baba Ramdev to produce the original record of his statement on the use of allopathic medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic. A bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hrishikesh Roy asked senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the yoga guru, “What did he actually say? You have not presented the whole thing.” Rohatgi told the bench that he would produce the original video along with the transcript.
To this the bench said, “All right.” With this, it adjourned the matter to July 5. The court was hearing Baba Ramdev’s plea to stay proceedings in respect of several FIRs lodged against him by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Bihar and Chhattisgarh for his remarks against the use of allopathic medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic. installation has been requested.
The Patna and Raipur units of the IMA have filed a complaint against Ramdev, alleging that his comments on the COVID-19 containment process may lead to bias and discourage people from seeking proper treatment against the pandemic.
In his petition, Ramdev has also requested to transfer the FIRs registered in Patna and Raipur to Delhi. During the hearing held through video conferencing, Rohatgi told the bench that Ramdev is an eminent person and a supporter of yoga and ayurveda. He said that during an event Ramdev had read a message on WhatsApp which was sent to him.
Rohatgi said that Ramdev has clarified that he has nothing against doctors and anyone in his heart. Several complaints have been filed against him at different places. Transfer these complaints to Delhi.
Rohatgi said that last year when Patanjali had brought ‘Coronil’, allopathic doctors turned against him. “He (Ramdev) is not against him. Why should they go to so many places? Everyone has freedom of speech.”
Ramdev has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Disaster Management Act, 2005. It is worth noting that due to the alleged statement of Baba Ramdev, the debate of Allopathy vs Ayurveda started in the country. However, Baba Ramdev withdrew his statement on May 23 after Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan termed the remarks as “inappropriate” and wrote a letter.
