Attack on military base in Yemen kills five soldiers

Five members of pro-government forces were killed in an explosion targeting a military base in Yemen’s southern province of Abyan.

A massive explosion took place on Sunday at the headquarters of the 5th Infantry Army Brigade located in the Mudia district of Abyan. He said five soldiers were killed in the blast and more than 40 were injured.

The blast took place at the military base when soldiers were gathering for afternoon prayers, the official said. He said pro-government military experts have launched an investigation into the nature of the blast and its main causes. No individual or organization has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since late 2014 following the capture of several northern provinces by Houthi rebels and the expulsion of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s internationally recognized government from the capital, Sanaa.
