2 cases of Delta Plus confirmed in UP

Genome sequencing of COVID positive samples from Uttar Pradesh has revealed two cases of Delta plus strain.
In May this year, 100 samples were regularly sent to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi and the reports were received earlier this week.
The Delta Plus strain is highly transmitted and lowers the body’s immunity.
According to Amit Mohan Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Health and Family Welfare, the cases were identified during genome sequencing of samples in the state. The surface of the Delta Plus virus makes COVID appropriate behavior very necessary.
So far, more than 1,000 samples have been sent from the state to various laboratories for genome sequencing.
Of these, more than 80 percent tested positive for the Delta variant, while about 6 percent tested positive for the Alpha.
Two cases of the Delta Plus strain have been reported for the first time.
Sources revealed that two patients hailing from Gorakhpur and Deoria districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh had contracted the infection in May.
Of these, a 66-year-old resident of Deoria died during treatment, while the other is a 23-year-old resident doctor at Baba Raghav Das Medical College, Gorakhpur.
The two had no travel history and were unrelated.
The elderly patient contracted the infection on May 7 and was treated at home till his health deteriorated and was shifted to his BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur. He died on 29 May during treatment.
Health department officials said they had no travel history and all 27 contacts tested negative for COVID-19.
