Odisha : Tight security arrangements made for Rath Yatra in Puri

To ensure smooth conduct of the annual Rath Yatra to be held in Puri on July 12, the Odisha government has deployed 65 platoon forces along with senior officers to look after the security arrangements for the festival. Additional Director General (Law and Order) R.K. Sharma said, the entire city has been divided into 12 zones. After reviewing the security arrangements in Puri, he said that 65 platoons along with 10 senior officers of the rank of Additional SP have been deployed for the festivities.
Sources said the police force will not only provide security but also ensure proper enforcement of COVID-19 guidelines like social distancing and wearing of masks.

All the entry points (8 check points) in the district will be sealed to restrict the movement of people from other parts of the state and other places to Puri during the Rath Yatra festival, a source said.
Like last year, the worship festival of Lord Jagannath in the pilgrim town of Puri will be conducted without the participation of devotees in view of the COVID-19 situation.

RT-PCR test of the servitors is being done. Sevayat (servants) having negative report of COVID-19 test and who have been fully vaccinated will be allowed to participate in chariot pulling.
Meanwhile, all hotels, dharamshalas and guest houses on Grand Road have been asked not to allow any tourists or devotees. They have been directed to vacate all boarders and guests by Saturday evening.

The district administration has also relaxed the bandh on Saturday. However, from 8 pm on Sunday, Section 144 of CrPC will remain in force and no shop or essential activity will be allowed on Grand Road. Officials said only those with duty passes would be allowed for the Rath Yatra.
