Gangubai’s real name was Ganga Harjivandas, who hailed from Kathiawadi, Gujarat. She fell in love with her father’s accountant at the age of 16 and fled to Mumbai after marrying him. Her husband is said to have sold her for Rs 500. After that she started doing prostitution. Later in her life she did many works in the interest of women and became famous as Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Bhansali’s film is based on the book Mafia Queen of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi. In this book, Zaidi has uncovered many layers of life of Ganga Harjivandas, a girl from Kathiawadi in Gujarat. In this, he has also mentioned about many shocking accidents. The shooting of this film has been done in Mumbai. An attempt has been made to show touching characters on screen in this film.
