Conway receives ICC Player of the Month award
New Zealand’s best opener Devon Conway in men’s and England’s Sophie Ecclestone has been selected for the ICC Player of the Month award in the women’s category. Both will be given this award for their outstanding performance in the series that concluded in the month of June.
It is noteworthy that Conway has become the first player from New Zealand to win this award after his impressive performance in the first month of his Test cricket career. The left-handed batsman scored a crucial double century in his Test debut against England at Lord’s. He then scored two half-centuries in his next two matches, including the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India at Southampton.
In the men’s category, he has beaten compatriot Kyle Jamieson, who bowled brilliantly in the WTC final, and star South African batsman Chinton de Kock.
Rameez Raja, who heads the ICC Voting Academy, said of Conway, “His batting on his Test debut at Lord’s is one of the best shows of the year.” He plays the ball late. He is patient like a saint and walks with the ease of a warrior.
England’s left arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone did well in the series against India in June. In the women’s category, she has surpassed the Indian pair of Shafali Verma and Sneh Rana. With this, she has become the second English woman cricketer to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award. Earlier, Tammy Beaumont received this award in February.
Voting Academy representative Mpumello Mbangwa said of Ecclestone, “The past month has been great for Ecclestone. He troubled the Indian players a lot by bowling well in the series against India. There is no doubt that his opponents were indecisive to deal with him, as he did not give any chance to the batsmen to escape. It was a wonderful month for her, in which she was very impressive for her England team.
