Death toll in Florida building collapse reaches 94

The death toll has risen to 94 after a partial collapse of a 12-story residential building in Surfside, Florida. Rescue teams are searching for more bodies in the rubble. This was reported by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniela Levin Cava. Kava said 83 of the 94 victims have been identified and 80 families of the dead have been informed.

As identification becomes more difficult over time, the numbers are fluid and will continue to change, he said.

Those recently identified include three-year-old Luis Vicente Petengil López Moreira, the youngest victim ever known.

While living in Champlain Towers South when the building collapsed in the early hours of June 24, the deaths of Sofia López Moreira and her husband, Luis Petengil, were confirmed and identified in an earlier release.

Besides their son, the couple’s two daughters aged six and nine and the family’s maternal grandmother also died in the tragedy.

The entire family has been identified.
Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez arrived in the US on July 9 to grieve the loss of his family members.

According to Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett, the investigation has so far met little success, though ongoing efforts to establish the cause of the collapse.
