South Africa deploys army to stop violent protests

The South African government has deployed the military to KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces to help prevent violent protests and looting.
The South African National Defense Force said on Monday it had been invited by the National Joint Operations and Intelligence Structure to help law enforcement agencies.
General Mafi Mogoboji, SANDF Director of the Defense Corporate Communications Brigade, said the deployment would begin as soon as all deployment procedures were in place.
He said, the purpose of deployment of SANDF is to provide security and a safe working environment for police and other law enforcement agencies when they carry out constitutionally mandated law and order duties.
Six people were killed and 219 arrested over the weekend in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal following violent protests that followed a 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court, police said.
Hundreds of shops and businesses were looted in both provinces.
