Alstom begins production of regional commuter and transit trains
Alstom started manufacturing regional commuter and transit trains for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut semi-high speed rail corridor of RRTS Phase 1. In May 2020, the company was awarded a contract for the design, manufacture and supply of 210 regional commuter and transit train cars and maintenance service for 15 years.
Started construction of regional commuter and transit trains. In May 2020, the company was awarded a contract for the design, manufacture and supply of 210 regional commuter and transit train cars and 15 years of comprehensive maintenance service.
As per the contract, Alstom will supply 30 regional commuter trainsets, each of six cars, and 10 mass transit cars of three cars each. These RRTS trains will be 100% manufactured in the country at Alstom’s facility in Savli (Gujarat) with over 80 per cent localization in line with the country’s objective of self-reliant India and the guidelines of Make-in-India. This facility will make bogie, car body and test the train. The propulsion systems and electricals are being manufactured at the company’s factory in Maneja (Gujarat).
Ellen Spohrey, Managing Director, Alstom India, said, “The project is a game-changer for India’s regional rail segment, which will contribute to socio-economic development by benefiting millions. We are delighted to start locally manufacturing these technologically advanced trains for the country’s first semi high-speed commuter service. At Alstom, we remain focused on continuously developing products and solutions that will continue to do great work for decades to come.
The train design for India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) was presented in September 2020. Inspired by the Lotus Temple, the iconic monument of Delhi, the new, modern and advanced look of the new trains is a unique amalgamation of India’s rich heritage and sustainability.
These energy efficient semi high-speed aerodynamic trains will be equipped with the latest technological features, which will provide a better experience to all passengers, commuters including Divyang. These trains have been built to transform the future of regional commute for commuters in India. The RRTS corridor will operate the fastest trains in India that will be designed to run at a speed of 180 kmph. With the right ergonomics, safety, low life cycle cost and high recyclability, these trains will be an attractive alternative to sustainability, which will give relief from traffic jams by promoting mass transport and will contribute significantly in reducing air pollution. Alstom’s scope of work includes the design, supply, testing and commissioning of signaling and train control, supervision, platform screen doors and telecommunication systems for this 82.15 km corridor. The line is the first line in India to have adopted the European Train Control System (ETCS) Hybrid Level 2 signaling system, which is the main signaling and train control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
