Australia’s De Minaur withdraws from Olympics after being found corona infected
Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics after being found corona infected. The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) confirmed this on Friday.
Before leaving for Tokyo, De Minaur had his corona test done 96 and 72 hours ago as per the guidelines of the Japanese government and both of his tests have come back positive. As Australia’s top-ranked men’s player, De Minaur was set to compete in both singles and doubles tournaments.
According to the AOC, De Minaur has not been in contact with other members of the Australian Olympic team since testing negative on July 5. AOC chief Ian Chesterman expressed sympathy for De Minaur, saying, “This is the reality of the world.” Effective measures are needed to ensure Japan and Olympic activities are held safely and the Games are held safely. The safety of the Australian Olympic team and the Japanese community is paramount and the system in place has worked. Alex not being able to attend the Olympics is a pity for us and him.
