Ahead of her Delhi tour, Mamata Banerjee declared Trinamool Parliamentary Party President
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be the new president of the Trinamool Congress parliamentary party. Party MP Derek O’Brien made the announcement on Friday. Mamta Banerjee is going to visit New Delhi next week. Before this, she is expected to lay the groundwork for greater national focus of flamboyant regional leaders. Taking over from MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Mamata Banerjee will be among the few political leaders who have led her party’s parliamentary party without being elected to Parliament. In 1998, Sonia Gandhi led the Congress Parliamentary Party. Then she became the head of the party.
In a press conference in Delhi, Derek O’Brien said that “Mamata Banerjee will be the president of our Trinamool Parliamentary Party. This is a reality that we are formalizing. Mamata Banerjee has been a Member of Parliament for seven times. She is already guiding the Parliamentary Party.” It was a strategic decision.”
The announcement comes amid an uproar in Parliament, with Trinamool MP Dr Shantanu Sen facing action for tearing down IT minister Ashwini Vaishnav’s response to the Pegasus spying scandal.
On the disruption in Parliament proceedings and the uproar by the opposition, the Trinamool leader said, “We want Parliament to function. We want to discuss two or three issues. Pegasus issue needs to be discussed… We want agriculture laws.” want to cancel.”
He said the party was “not bothered” by Dr Sen’s suspension, adding that “people will suspend him (BJP). Our ally Mahua (Moitra) has moved a privilege motion (against suspension).”
There is a lot of discussion about Mamta Banerjee’s Delhi visit starting from Monday. Many see it as an attempt to play a wider role in national politics and unite the country’s different opposition against the BJP.
His nephew Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has come to Delhi to prepare for this tour. This will be her first visit to Delhi after Mamata’s massive victory in Bengal elections against the BJP. He is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as opposition leaders including Sonia Gandhi.
