California wildfires, thousands evacuated safely

Authorities were forced to evacuate more than 14,000 people after the Tamarack forest fire in California increased to 58,417 acres. On July 4, a fire broke out in Alpine County, California, bordering Nevada, as reported by the Interesting Incident Information System (Inciweb).

As the fire spread across the highway, new evacuation orders were issued for communities along the highway corridor.

The fire destroyed at least 10 buildings and forced the cancellation of Death Ride, an annual bicycle race.

Inciweb said more than 1,300 personnel from across the country are helping to fight the fire, whose quick expansion on Thursday forced them to regroup.

A video clip posted online on Friday showed firefighters battling the fire.

Despite light winds forecast for Friday night, firefighters expected the fire to remain active due to the vast amount of dry forest on the ground and the heat.
