US and Russia will hold talks on arms control next week

Strategic stability talks between the US and Russia will be held in Geneva on July 28. State Department Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman will lead the US delegation’s participation in the talks, which will include Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins.

US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin at their first summit in Geneva in June agreed to begin talks to lay the foundation for future arms control and risk reduction measures.

Washington and Moscow this February extended the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (NEW START) for five years until 2026. It is the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between the two nuclear superpowers.
