28 kidnapped students freed in Nigeria

Nigerian police have confirmed that 28 students kidnapped by gunmen have been freed from a secondary school in the country’s northwestern state of Kaduna.

Mohammad Jalige, a police spokesman in Kaduna, said the students were freed last night and arrangements were being made to reunite them with their families. Medical help will be provided to them after meeting their loved ones.

Mr Jalige said these students were among the students kidnapped after a large number of unidentified gunmen attacked from Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna on July 5. He, however, declined to comment on how the victims were freed or whether a ransom had to be paid for their release.

Nigerian police said on Thursday they had rescued two students kidnapped by gunmen. A joint team of Nigerian Police, Army and Navy managed to rescue 26 students and a female teacher after chasing the attackers after calls for help on July 5.
