Mary Kom out of the Olympics, lost in a fierce match to Colombian boxer
Six-time world champion Indian boxer MC Mary Kom suffered a defeat at the hands of Colombia’s Ingrit Lorena Valencia in the women’s flyweight 51kg category round of 16 at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics here.
Mary Kom, considered a strong contender for the medal, was defeated 3-2 by Valencia in a close contest. Mary Kom’s loss in the pre-quarterfinal match has dealt a big blow to India’s medal hopes. While Valencia managed to impress three judges with her performance, Mary Kom impressed only two judges.
In the first round, Mary lost 1-4 to the Colombian boxer, while in the second round the Indian boxer came back strongly and won 3-2. However, in the third round, Valencia not only made a comeback, but also won the match 3–2.
Colombia’s third seed Ingrit Valencia is the bronze medalist of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Mary Kom had faced the Colombian boxer twice before and won both, including the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Championships.
Earlier, she entered the pre-quarterfinals with a stunning win over Domenica Republic’s Miguelina Hernandez García. 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom defeated 15 years her junior and Pan American bronze medalist 4-1.
