2879 petitions related to violation of fundamental rights are pending in the Supreme Court: Government

Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju informed that from the year 2019 till July 23 this year, a total of 3036 PILs related to violation of fundamental rights were filed in the Supreme Court and the number of pending cases related to it during the same period is 2879.
Rijiju gave this information to the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question today. He said that in the year 2019, 1176 cases related to violation of fundamental rights were filed in the Supreme Court while in 2020 the number increased to 1319. A total of 541 such cases have been filed till July 23 this year. Giving information about the pending petitions during the last two years and the current year, he said that the total number of pending cases in the Supreme Court related to violation of Fundamental Rights till July 23 is 2879. Orissa is at the forefront of cases related to violation of Fundamental Rights in various High Courts of the country where a total of 1552 petitions have been filed since 2019 till date. After this comes the number of Madhya Pradesh High Court where a total of 1487 petitions have been filed so far in the same period. The Karnataka High Court is in third place in this matter. So far 1479 petitions have been filed here.
According to Rijiju, 204 petitions related to violation of fundamental rights in Calcutta High Court, six in Chhattisgarh, 165 in Guwahati, 77 in Gujarat, 646 in Andhra Pradesh, 71 in Jharkhand, 12 in Madras High Court, 14 in Manipur, 13 in Meghalaya , 587 petitions have been filed in Punjab and Haryana High Court, 631 in Rajasthan High Court, 44 in Tripura, 30 in Telangana and 555 in Uttarakhand. According to the Union Minister, some High Courts including Bombay, Allahabad, Delhi, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir have stated that no separate information is maintained about such PILs. When asked about the PILs pending in various High Courts since the year 2019 till now, Rijiju said that the maximum number of such cases are in the Orissa High Court. The number of public interest cases pending here is 7802. The total number of PILs pending in Madras High Court is 5698 while in Rajasthan the number of such cases is 2750.
