Rajasthan Royals owners take over CPL’s team Barbados

The two-time Caribbean Premier League (CPL) champions Barbados Tridents team will now be called Barbados Royals. In fact, the owners of Royals Sports Group (EM Sporting Holdings Limited) and Rajasthan Royals have acquired a majority stake in the Barbados franchise.
After this news, Barbados Royals has become the third team in the CPL whose owners also have a share in the IPL, before this two such teams were Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Joux. It is noteworthy that the Barbados team won the CPL title for the first time in 2014 under the captaincy of Kieron Pollard, while it also became the champion in 2019 under the leadership of Jason Holder. It is understood that Holder will continue to lead the team in 2021 and will be assisted by Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara, who will take on the role of Rajasthan Royals with Barbados Royals.
“The Barbados Royals will be an important part of the Royals cricket ecosystem,” Sangakkara said in a statement. With a great talent pool of local players, we have the opportunity to develop new strategies that will benefit the Royals group. We are also excited by the prospect of how we can foster growth in the game of cricket.

Commenting on the Barbados acquisition, Manoj Badale, President, Royals Sports Group and Principal Owner of Rajasthan Royals, said, “We are delighted to sign this deal with Manish Patel to acquire a majority stake in CPL franchise Barbados. We are grateful to the Government of Barbados for their continued support and we look forward to making a positive impact on both cricket and tourism for the country. We have ambitious plans to brand Royals globally and this is an important strategic move.

It is noteworthy that the CPL 2021 season is to be held from 26 August to 15 September and all the matches of the tournament will be played in St. The Barbados team will begin their campaign on August 26, where they will take on the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the second match of the double-header on Opening Day.
