Kandahar airport hit by rockets, flights suspended
All flights were suspended on Sunday following last night’s rocket attacks on Afghanistan’s second-largest Kandahar airport.
According to preliminary information, Taliban militants fired three rockets at Kandahar International Airport late last night and two of them hit the runway. Local officials are conducting inspections and trying to repair and reopen the runway as soon as possible.
According to sources, no casualties have been reported in the attack.
The city of Kandahar, the capital of the southern province of Kandahar, has been witness to fierce clashes recently as Afghan government security forces continue to fight hard to stop Taliban militants from advancing. Militants have been trying to take over the city after capturing several suburban districts of the province in recent weeks.
Dawood Farhad, director of the city’s main government hospital, said on Sunday that three civilians were killed and 10 civilians, including two women and two children, were injured during heavy fighting in Kandahar city on Saturday.
