Cuba wins two more golds at Tokyo Olympics

Cuba added two more gold medals to its fleet at the Tokyo Olympics, taking its total gold medal tally in the tournament so far to four.

The first gold came when Sergei Torres and Fernando Dayan took first place in the men’s canoe doubles 1000 m final, while the second gold came in boxing. Boxer Ronil Iglesias on Tuesday won his second Olympic gold medal after training in a bio-bubble on the outskirts of Havana during the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier on Monday, Cuba’s Greco-Roman wrestlers Mijan Lopez and Luis Orta won the country’s first gold medal. Meanwhile, Leuriz Pupo finished second in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event, while Yaimi Perez won the bronze medal in the women’s discus final. Also Juan Miguel Echevarria won the silver medal in the long jump, with his compatriot Mekel Masso taking the bronze.

Cuba has won a total of 226 medals since its Olympic debut at the 1900 Paris Games, the most among Latin American and Caribbean nations in Olympic history. With a total of five gold medals projected, Cuba is expected to finish in the top 20 for overall medals at the Tokyo Olympics.
