Modi to chair open debate on maritime security at UN Security Council

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually preside over an open debate on maritime security at the United Nations Security Council on August 9. This will be the first time that an Indian prime minister will preside over an open debate at a world body.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet, PM Modi will chair an open debate on maritime security, maintenance of international peace and security at the United Nations Security Council in virtual mode on 9 August. This will be the first time that the Indian Prime Minister will preside over the open debate.

On 1 August, India assumed the month-long rotation presidency in the 15-nation UN Security Council and on 1 January, India began its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. This is India’s seventh term.

India has planned high-level talks with the world community on key issues such as maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism during the month of August.

India has been at the forefront of helping friendly countries and enhancing military cooperation with friendly countries in pursuance of the country’s Act East policy.

The Indian Navy makes regular deployments to friendly countries and the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions to further the Prime Minister’s Initiative of Security and Development for All in the Region (SAGAR).

Such engagements build bridges of friendship and strengthen international cooperation.

These maritime initiatives enhance synergy and coordination between the Indian Navy and friendly countries based on common maritime interests and commitment to freedom of navigation at sea.

Apart from regular port calls, the Indian Navy works closely with friendly navies to build military ties and develop interoperability in conducting maritime operations.
