Egypt closes border to Gaza in view of tensions with Hamas

Egypt has closed its main border leading to the Gaza Strip in the wake of tensions with the militant group Hamas. Officials gave this information.
This is the first time since the beginning of this year that Rafa crossing has been closed during a working day. Egypt kept the border open in May during an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas.
According to Egyptian officials, the closure of the border leading to the Gaza Strip is part of Cairo’s efforts to enforce a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. However, it is not yet clear how long this limit will remain closed.
An Egyptian official said the purpose of closing the border to Gaza was to put pressure on Hamas. Egypt is angry that Hamas’ indirect talks with Israel have not progressed in the right direction. Apart from this, efforts are also being made to negotiate with the Palestinian factions.
In the wake of the Israel-Egyptian blockade, Hamas organized a protest on Saturday, during which violence erupted.
A large number of Palestinian citizens demonstrated near the Israeli border. At least 24 Palestinian civilians were injured in firing by Israeli troops, two of whom are in critical condition.
Egypt has been a major mediator between Israel and Hamas for many years. Egypt’s intelligence chief Abbas Kamel visited Israel last week to discuss a ceasefire deal with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
