Indian women’s skeet team won gold
The Indian junior women’s skeet team, comprising Ganemat Sekhon, Raiza Dhillon and Ariba Khan, produced a scintillating performance to clinch the country’s gold medal on the third day of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru on Friday.
Indian team defeated Italy team 6-0 in the gold medal match. This is Ganemat’s second medal in the competition. He had earlier on Thursday won India’s first and historic silver medal in the individual skeet event at the World Championships level. Subsequently, the Indian junior men’s skeet team of Rajveer Gill, Ayush Rudraraju and Abhay Singh Sekhon also won the bronze medal by defeating Turkey by a 6-0 margin. With this, India now has a total of seven medals, which include two gold, three silver and two bronze medals. America tops the medal table.
It is noteworthy that the women’s skeet team qualified for the gold medal match, finishing second behind Italy in qualification. The Indian team scored 457 out of 525. Each of the three shooters had to shoot seven rounds of 25-shots each. From India, Ganemat scored the highest score of 155 out of 175. While Raiza got 152 marks and Ariba got 150 marks. Italy took the top spot among the five teams with a total of 460 points.
In the final, however, it was Raiza and Ariba, who shot 10 out of 10 in the first two rounds to give India a 4-0 lead. In the third and deciding five-shot round, both the teams missed a lot of marks, but India made six shots against Italy’s five shots to win the gold medal.
The Indian junior men’s skeet team on Wednesday finished third in their event with 453 points. Italy, American and Turkey had scored 488, 487 and 449 respectively. In the bronze medal match, none of the Turkish shooters could score full shots in any round, while Indian shooters Abhay Sekhon and Rajveer Gill won with five shots each in the first and third rounds respectively.
It is noteworthy that the final of the junior mixed team skeet is to be held tomorrow, in which two Indian pairs Ayush and Raija and Abhay and Ariba will compete for the medal.
