Swachh Bharat Mission will continue till 2025-26 : Center

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the cleanliness campaign across the country will continue till 2025-26. The decision has been taken by the Union Cabinet. The mission will focus on sustainability of Open Defecation Free (ODF) outcomes in the 2011 Census to achieve scientific processing of solid waste in all cities and manage wastewater in cities with a population of less than 1 lakh, it said in a statement. Will do [Cities not covered under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (MRUT)] under which all cities will be made to achieve at least 3-star garbage free certification.
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the decision.

The statement further said that, a financial outlay of Rs 1,41,600 crore has been finalized for SBM-U 2.0, which includes the central share at Rs 36,465 for the period 2021-22 to 2025-26, which is This is 2.5 times more than the financial outlay of Rs 62,009 crore in the final phase mission.

The implementation of the components of the mission will be done in a structured and time bound manner, which includes in-depth analysis of required infrastructure, detailed 5-year action plans and annual action plans with timelines.

As per the official release mentioned under Sustainable Sanitation, the mission will focus on ensuring full access to sanitation facilities in the next five years to serve the additional population migrating from rural to urban areas in search of employment and better opportunities. This will be done through the construction of over 3.5 lakh individual, community and public toilets.
The second point is to ensure complete liquid waste management in cities with a population of less than 1 lakh wherein a new component introduced under the mission will ensure that systems and processes are in place in every city so that all wastewater is safely contained, collected, , transported and treated and no waste water pollutes our water bodies.

Sustainable solid waste management should have 100% source segregation of waste with functional Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in all cities with a focus on phasing out single use plastics.
Establishment of Construction and Destruction (C&D) waste processing facilities and deployment of mechanical sweepers in National Clean Air Program (NCAP) cities and cities with a population of more than five lakhs, rectification of all dump sites, the release said. To free 14,000 acres of closed land lying under 150 million tonnes of old waste.
