Tamilnadu : Heavy rain again in Chennai after 6 years, PM Modi spoke to Tamil Nadu CM Stalin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday after heavy rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. PM Modi assured Stalin of all possible assistance from the Center in rescue and relief work. Heavy rains overnight have led to waterlogging in Chennai and its suburbs and the administration has issued a primary flood alert as three reservoirs in the city have been opened in a phased manner to flush out excess water.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Conversed with Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri MK Stalin and discussed the situation in view of heavy rainfall in various areas of the state. Assured all possible assistance from the Center in rescue and relief work. I pray for everyone’s welfare and safety.”
Heavy rain again in Chennai after six years
Chennai, which has been devastated six years ago by heavy rains, has been hit by waterlogging after torrential rains last night and water entered houses in low-lying areas on Sunday. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have received about 43 per cent more rainfall since the onset of the North-East Monsoon in October, a Meteorological Department official said.
Chennai and suburban areas of Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts have been receiving torrential rains since Saturday morning. It rained all night and continued till Sunday morning. This is the most torrential rain in recent years.
S Balachandran, deputy director of the Meteorological Department, said that the highest rainfall of 45 cm was received in 1976. After that in 1985, Chennai received 23 and 33 cm of rain on two different days. Six years ago in 2015, the city had received 25 cm of rain and at present the city has received almost the same amount of rain.
