Chief Justice of India (CJI) N. V. Ramana said that the increasing attacks on judges are a matter of serious concern for the judiciary. The CJI said there is a need for law enforcement agencies to effectively deal with such malicious attacks.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) N. V. Ramana said, ‘These attacks appear to be sponsored and synchronized. Law enforcing agencies, especially central agencies, need to deal effectively with such malicious attacks. Governments are expected to create a safe environment so that judges and judicial officers can act fearlessly.

The CJI also said that his experience as a legal professional in various roles inspired him to call for ‘Indianisation of the judiciary’. He further said, ‘The judicial system, as it exists in our country today, is essentially still colonial in nature. It does not account for social realities or local conditions. CJI Ramana said that something should happen that people should feel confident in approaching the courts. He emphasized that only when the litigants get a chance to participate directly, their faith in the process and the outcome will be strengthened.

Said this thing on PIL

On Public Interest Litigations (PIL), CJI Ramana said, “I am not sure that anywhere else in the world a simple letter written by a common man would have got the judicial attention of the Supreme Order.” Yes, it is sometimes ridiculed as a ‘publicity interest litigation’ due to its misuse. We must always be vigilant to discourage motivated PILs. The CJI also said that it is a matter of great happiness that the number of vacancies in the Supreme Court has now come down to just one.
