After the accident of the Air Force helicopter carrying CDS General Bipin Rawat and others, many questions are being raised like why it happened, how it happened, were all the protocols followed…. There is one such question which is very disturbing because different things are coming out about it. The question is- Did the Air Force do a flight route recce before the CDS flight? Contradictory things are coming out about this.
CDS General Bipin Rawat took off from Sulur Airbase on Wednesday for Wellington in an Air Force Mi-17v5 helicopter. The chopper met with an accident at Nanjappachatiram in Coonoor, killing 13 of the 14 people on board, including CDS Rawat. Air Force Group Captain Varun Singh, who is flying the helicopter, is fighting for life in the hospital. “We cannot say with certainty whether the two helicopters had landed at the Wellington helipad or came back without landing,” he told the Times of India.
Senior officers of Madras Regimental Center said – no trial took place
On the other hand, a senior officer of the Madras Regimental Center in Wellington is telling something different. “Since the Mi-17v5 is a reliable helicopter, no trials were conducted with smaller helicopters,” he said.
At the same time, an official of the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington declined to say anything in the matter saying that he was not authorized to comment on it. CDS Rawat was going to deliver a lecture at the Defense Services Staff College itself.
Eyewitnesses claim – no other helicopter was seen during the day
In Nanjappachatiram, where the chopper crashed, eyewitnesses say they neither saw nor heard any other chopper during the day.

Human error behind the accident?
Ramesh Kumar suspects human error behind the accident. He said, ‘The Mi-17v5 was being flown by a very experienced pilot. The chopper was technically very advanced and I suspect human error may have caused the accident.
He said, ‘It may be that the fog or clouds have been thicker than normal. But in such a situation, the pilot has to take a decision in the blink of an eye. Maybe there was a mistake in taking the decision.
Kumar said that the black box of the helicopter has been found. It will be possible to know from him that what happened at the last moment that led to this accident.
‘Video seems to be an accident due to weather’
Ramesh Kumar is suspecting human error behind the accident, but Aviation Security Consultant Mohan Ranganathan’s apprehension is different. Ranganathan said, ‘I have carefully watched the video of the last moment of the helicopter. (This video was shot by a tourist which is quite viral on social media.) The fog was heavy and the helicopter was flying very low. I think the main reason for the accident is related to the weather.
Ranganathan further said that the Air Force does recce for the President, Vice President and Prime Minister but it is not necessary for any serving officer.
