PM Modi will visit Balrampur in UP today, will inaugurate Saryu Canal National Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh today and inaugurate the Saryu Canal National Project, which will provide water to irrigate more than 14 lakh hectares of land and benefit about 29 lakh farmers of the region. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) gave this information.

The PMO said in a statement on Friday that Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the 318 km long Saryu Canal National Project going to Gorakhpur via Bahraich, Shravasti and Balrampur on Saturday. Modi said work on the project started in 1978. But it was never fulfilled and his government took steps to fulfill it.

He tweeted, You will be surprised to know that work on Saryu Canal National Project started in 1978, but for decades this project was never completed. Expenses increased and people’s problems also increased. The project which was incomplete for four decades has been completed in four years.

Modi further said, “Tomorrow, on December 11, I will come to Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh to inaugurate a very special program – Saryu Canal National Project. This project will solve the irrigation related problems in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and will help our hardworking farmers.

According to the PMO, the work on this project started in 1978, but due to lack of budget allocation, coordination between the departments concerned and proper monitoring, it got delayed and could not get off the ground for almost four decades.

The PMO said that due to the commitment to the welfare and empowerment of farmers as well as priority completion of pending projects of national importance, the Prime Minister focused his attention on this project.

In order to complete this project, Modi brought it under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana in the year 2016 and set a target to complete it within the time limit. The PMO said that to make this a reality, other problems including land acquisition and legal hurdles were resolved and as a result of this, the work of this important project was completed within four years.

The PMO said that this project was completed in Rs 9800 crore. Out of this, a provision of Rs 4600 crore was made in the last four years. Five rivers have also been linked in this project. The said canal consisting of 318 km long main canal connecting Ghaghra, Saryu, Rapti, Banganga and Rohin rivers and 6,600 km of link canals connected with it is connected to nine districts of Purvanchal namely Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Gonda, Basti, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar. And about 29 lakh farmers of Gorakhpur will get benefit.

The PMO said that due to the delay in this project, the farmers of the area suffered huge losses, but now it will benefit them. The PMO said that now the farmers of the region will be able to produce on a large scale and take advantage of the agricultural productive potential of the region.
