On Thursday, 14 new cases of Omicron variant were reported in the country. Five new cases were reported in Karnataka, Telangana and the national capital Delhi four each, while a 41-year-old female health worker was found infected with Omicron in a village in Visapur tehsil of Mehsana district of Gujarat. With this, the number of Omicron infected in the country has increased to 83. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the central government has also become active. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Thursday reviewed the situation of COVID-19 in the country.

Home Secretary reviewed the situation

This new variant of Corona has reached 11 states and union territories including Maharashtra and the national capital Delhi. In view of the seriousness of the situation, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Thursday reviewed the situation of COVID-19 in the country amid rising cases of Omicron. The meeting also reviewed the health preparedness of all the Union Territories to deal with the pandemic situation. Administrative officers of Union Territories and Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan attended the meeting.

Government’s close watch on the situation

The Spokesperson of the Union Home Ministry said that the Union Home Secretary chaired a meeting with the Union Health Secretary to review the epidemic situation in the Union Territories. Just a day earlier, on Wednesday, the Union Health Secretary also held a meeting with senior officials of Union Territories and States. In this meeting, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan had issued instructions to the officials of the states to test all the oxygen plants.

Section-144 implemented in Mumbai
In view of the growing threat of Omicron, Section-144 has been imposed in Mumbai till midnight of December 31 (New Year’s Eve). Talking to news agency ANI, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) Police Inspector Nasir Kulkarni said that we will take action if people do not follow the proper treatment of COVID-19. We have instructed people to wear masks. A total of 13 cases of Omicron have been reported in Mumbai.
The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday said that five more suspected patients with S-gene drop have been detected in the state, indicating that they may be infected with the Omicron variant. The state reported the first Omicron case on Wednesday after genome testing of a sample from a 47-year-old man who arrived in Chennai from Nigeria. Six members of its family had S-gene drops, raising suspicion of Omicron. The samples of all these have been sent for genome examination, whose report is awaited.
