Bill passed in Lok Sabha to link Aadhaar-Voter ID before elections in 5 states

The government has taken a big step before the elections in five states next year. He introduced the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Its purpose is to link Voter ID with Aadhar card. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced it in the lower house for discussion on the bill. It has been passed by the Lok Sabha amidst heavy opposition from the opposition. The opposition has considerable objection to some provisions of the bill. He demanded that the bill be sent to the Standing Committee of Parliament. However, the government rejected these objections. What is this entire bill, what will happen with it, what are the objections of the opposition? Let us understand all these aspects here.

First of all let us know what is the intention of the government to bring the bill. Kiren Rijiju has told about it. According to him, it is not necessary to link the Aadhar card with the voter list. It is voluntary. This will help in finding the address. It will help in preventing bogus voting.

He has said that this is a very important bill from the point of view of electoral reforms. In the present system, if your name did not appear in the voter list by January 2, then you had to wait for 1 year. Now the window for this will open 4 times in a year. Rijiju has pointed out that in the Act (Representation of the People Act of 1951) the word ‘wife’ has been changed to spouse.

What will be the benefit of having Aadhaar-Voter ID link?

Eminent Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay talks about the benefits of this decision. According to him, there are still crores of duplicate voter IDs in the country. All these will disappear once the new law is enacted. Linking Voter ID with Aadhaar will help in catching intruders. Many other types of illegal activities which were being done through Fake Voter ID will also be curbed.

According to legal experts, mobile connections were being taken with the help of fake voter IDs. Ration cards were also being made. Many other types of government facilities were also being taken. All these will be under control. A large number of Rohingya Bangladeshis have got Voter ID made. It will also help in catching them. Whatever game was going on through fake voter ID, now all those things will be stopped.

Voting fraud will also be cracked down

Experts say that it will also crack down on bogus voting. It has been seen that only one person’s name is present in the voter list in the city and also in his village. In this way, the way for him to vote in both the places remains open. This gives rise to fraud. After the new law is made, people will not be able to add names in the voter list at different places. In this way, there will be less scope for rigging in elections. In March last year, the Law Ministry told Parliament that the Election Commission has proposed linking of voter ID with Aadhaar number in this regard.

What is the other side?

Not everything is good. There are also dangers of linking Aadhaar with Voter ID. The opposition is making a ruckus about this. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have opposed the bill. They say that this will violate the basic rights of the people. The opposition also alleges that the bill also violates the Supreme Court’s decision on Aadhaar. He demanded to send the bill to the standing committee.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury gave his reaction after the Election Law (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha. He asked what is the matter of such a hurry. Bringing the bill today and passing it today itself. From this haste it seems that the intentions of the government are not right. This bill will be used in a wrong way in Uttar Pradesh elections.

What are the dangers of Aadhaar-Voter ID linking?

The menace of linking Aadhaar with Voter ID cannot be turned away. Currently, the voter’s data remains in the database of the Election Commission. It is not linked with any other database of the government. When the database of Aadhaar and Voter ID is linked, people’s information will be linked to each other. Recently there have been many incidents of data leaks and hackers getting them. In such a situation, the possibility of losing people’s privacy can increase.
