Google pays tribute to India’s first female teacher Fatima Sheikh with a doodle

Fatima Sheikh worked with Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule for the education of girls. She co-founded the Swadeshi Library, one of India’s first schools for girls, in 1848.
She lived with her brother Usman, and both siblings opened their home to Phule after protests over his attempt to educate people from the lower castes. Both opened the Swadeshi library in their own house.
Sheikh went door-to-door inviting the underprivileged sections of his community to learn in the Swadeshi library. He faced strong opposition from influential sections who tried to humiliate those involved in the movement for girls’ education, but Shaikh and his associates continued their struggle.
Fatima Sheikh used to bring children from house to house to study in her house and used to teach those children. By doing this, Fatima Sheikh became immortal in Indian history forever and became an example not only in India but in the whole world.
