According to the information, he was very ill and was undergoing treatment for the last one month. He was admitted to the hospital last night after he complained of breathlessness, but he could not be saved. The great Kathak dancer Birju Ji Maharaj had crossed the age of 83 and was about to turn 84 next month, but died before that. There is a wave of mourning in the whole country on his death. Giving information on the death of Birju Maharaj, his granddaughter Ragini Maharaj told that, on Sunday night, he had eaten food with my hands and also drank coffee. After this we were playing Antakshari, when he started having trouble in breathing. After which he was taken to the hospital. Birju Maharaj was suffering from kidney ailment and was on ‘dialysis’.

Birju Maharaj was considered the emperor of Kathak dance. The Banaras Hindu University and Khairagarh University conferred honorary doctorates on Birju Maharaj. Birju Maharaj was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1983. Apart from this, he was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Kalidas Samman.
