People do this for the feeling of patriotism, but do you know that there are many legal rules for hoisting the flag. These rules say that not everyone can put the flag of India on their car and doing so is a violation of the Indian Flag Code. You must also be thinking that how can this happen, but it is so.

Who can put up the flag?

This information has been given on the official website of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Flag Code of India 2002 has been prepared for hoisting the national flag. In this, many rules have been made regarding flag hoisting and it has been told how the national flag should be used. In this flag code, some people have been given special rights to hoist the flag in the car (motor-cars).

The President, the Vice President, the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor, the Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers, Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers; High Court judges can hoist the flag.

How to put the flag?

When a foreign guest travels in a car provided by the government, the national flag has to be placed on the right side of the car and the flag of the person of the other country concerned has to be placed on the left side of the car.

Action may be taken

According to the rules, if anyone other than the person mentioned above puts a flag on the car, then action can be taken against them. Apart from this, if any person burns, tramples or defiles the Constitution of India or any part thereof, then under the Prevention of Insults to National Pride Act, 1971, he can be jailed for up to 3 years or fine. Apart from this, many other rules have also been fixed in the Flag Code, according to which the flag can be used.

What was the order given by the Supreme Court?

Before 2004, flags were allowed to be raised only on government departments, offices and educational institutions. In 2004, while hearing the Government of India vs Naveen Jindal case, the Supreme Court said that every Indian has the right to hoist the tricolor. However, very few people have got the right to put the tricolor on the car and the common man cannot use the flag to put it in front of the car.
