Karnataka High Court bans religious dress in educational institutions till the verdict

Karnataka High Court has given a big blow to those demanding to wear Hijab. The court has banned the wearing of religious dress in schools and colleges till the decision in this matter and said that educational institutions can be opened till then. The next hearing in the case will now be held on Monday at 2:30 pm.

A bench of Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice JM Khaji, headed by Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, Rituraj Awasthi, is hearing the matter.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court appealed to the media not to report any remarks made by the court during the debate without seeing the order of the court. The court said, do not report on social media, newspaper or anywhere till the order is completed.

Earlier on Wednesday, the hearing was held in the Karnataka High Court. During this, Justice Krishna Dixit, the judge of Karnataka HC, who was hearing the case, decided to send the matter to a larger bench. Justice Dixit had said, the question of interim relief in this case will also be considered by a larger bench.

What’s the matter?

The Government of Karnataka has implemented Section 133 of the Karnataka Education Act-1983 in the state. Because of this, now uniform has been made mandatory in all schools and colleges. Under this, fixed uniform will be worn in government schools and colleges, private schools can also choose a uniform of their own.

The controversy over this decision started in January last month, when 6 girl students of a government college in Udupi took admission in the college wearing hijab. The controversy was about the fact that the college administration had forbidden the girl students to wear the hijab, but they came wearing it nonetheless. After that controversy, a ruckus started in other colleges also regarding hijab.

Nationwide debate

There has been a ruckus in the schools and colleges of Karnataka after the order to ban religious dress hijab. The dispute has reached through Karnataka and its schools and colleges to the rest of the country. Now politicians of different parties are also face to face on this. Protests are also taking place in Delhi-Mumbai.
