Hijab has also been banned in minority schools in Karnataka. The Bommai government of the state has issued orders regarding this on Thursday. In its order, the department has referred to the interim order of the Karnataka High Court prohibiting students from wearing saffron shawls, scarves and hijabs inside the classroom.

The order said, “The above order of the High Court is also applicable to residential schools, colleges, Maulana Azad Model English Medium Schools under Minorities Welfare Department and Maulana Azad Model English Medium Schools and schools under Minorities Welfare Department and Wearing saffron shawls, scarves and hijabs is prohibited in college classes.

The order comes amid rising tension in schools and colleges over minority girls. Last week, girl students wearing burqa and hijab were denied admission in schools and colleges following a High Court order.

Meanwhile, a case under section 144 of CrPC has been registered against nine people for violating prohibitory orders issued by Shivamogga district authority. They had protested against the officials of PU College in the district headquarter town for not allowing Muslim girls to wear burqa on the campus.
