Uttar Pradesh : 34 Muslim candidates of SP alliance won the election

UP Election Results 2022: The alliance of Samajwadi Party, RLD and Subhaspa failed to come to power in the UP assembly elections. But 34 Muslim candidates of the alliance registered victory. In the BJP alliance, Apna Dal had given ticket to a Muslim candidate, which is about one-third of its total MLAs. SP alliance had fielded 63 and BSP had fielded 86 Muslim candidates. Congress had also given Muslim candidates in about 60 seats. Most of the Muslim candidates of the SP alliance got success in the first two phases of UP. These include the victory of Nahid Hasan from Kairana, Azam Khan from Rampur, Abdullah Azam from Swar. Ashraf Ali defeated Suresh Rana, who was a minister in the Yogi government from Thana Bhavan. However, despite having Muslim candidates in all the seats and 30-40 per cent of the votes of Muslims on others, the coalition candidates could not register victory due to not being made a candidate of that community. It is also believed that in many seats there was a split in the votes due to the Muslim candidates of the BSP.
In which seats the Muslim vote is decisive
The Muslim population in Uttar Pradesh is about 19 percent. There were 85 seats in UP, in which the population of Muslims ranged from 25 to 50 percent. Whereas in 60 other seats, their population was between 20 and 25 percent. That is, there were 145 seats where Muslim candidates were in a position to play a decisive role. However, the BJP had won most of these seats last time due to the division of minority votes. In Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Bareilly, Bahraich, Saharanpur, Rampur, Bijnor, Balrampur, Shravasti, Ghaziabad, Baghpat, Gautam Budh Nagar and Jyotiba Phule Nagar, the Muslim population is between 25 and 50 percent. Whereas in Aligarh, Barabanki, Badaun, Bulandshahr, Pilibhit, Lucknow, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sant Kabirnagar, Sultanpur their population is between 20 to 25 percent.
Voted one sided
According to the CSDS, in the year 2017, about 55 percent Muslim votes went in favor of SP, 14 percent BSP, 33 percent Congress and about two percent in favor of BJP. It is interesting that in 2012, the SP came to power in spite of getting only 39 per cent Muslim votes. However, in 2022, about 80 percent of the vote went in favor of the alliance.
Muslim candidates given less than last time
SP and Congress had given 88 Muslim candidates in 2017 under the alliance. Whereas the BSP had given tickets to the maximum 99 Muslims. But out of 85 Muslim majority seats, Hindu candidates won 70 seats and only 15 were won by Muslims. Out of these 85 seats, 64 seats went to BJP and SP got only 16 seats.
