Majority fundamentalism more dangerous than minority fundamentalism: Kerala minister

Erupting a fresh debate on CPI(M)’s stand towards fundamentalism, party’s central committee member and Kerala government minister MV Govindan on Monday said majoritarian fundamentalism is more dangerous than minority fundamentalism.
According to the Indian Express, local self-government and excise minister Govindan reacted to the two political murders in the state last week and those allegedly involving the RSS and the Popular Front of India (PFI), saying, “Minority fundamentalism and majority fundamentalism”. cannot see through a single prism or equally. Majority fundamentalism is more dangerous. Majority fundamentalism is working towards building a Hindu Rashtra. He further said, ‘Hate towards minorities is part of that effort to create a Hindu Rashtra. Minority fundamentalism emerges to oppose majority fundamentalism. There is no doubt that it is majoritarian fundamentalism which is leading the growth of minority fundamentalism.
The minister said the killings of a local PFI leader and an RSS pracharak last week were aimed at creating an atmosphere of communal unrest. “There is a communal agenda behind these incidents. Both sides want to increase their power by indulging in such violence and the police cannot stop it. Reacting to Govindan’s comments on fundamentalism, BJP state president K. Surendran said the CPI(M)’s stand on minority fundamentalism will turn Kerala into Kashmir.
“The minister’s remarks indicate open support for PFI. When the PFI has become a threat to peaceful life in the country, the CPM’s tacit support for minority fundamentalism is a matter of concern. The CPI(M) has ties with communal forces. It is blaming the PFI, an Indian agency of international religious terrorism. CPI(M) is supporting extremist forces.
Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was appeasing all communal forces under the guise of social engineering. He said that since the CPI(M) was involved in bargaining with both the RSS and the PFI during the last assembly elections, the government cannot take strong action against communal forces. Since the 2021 assembly elections, the ruling CPM has faced allegations that the party has been soft on minority fundamentalism as well as majoritarian fundamentalism.
