After a month, Mother Ganga descended on the earth for the welfare of the residents and flowed till Gangasagar. Ganga Janmotsav will be celebrated on Saptami in the entire Gangetic region from Kailash to Gangasagar. Ganga poojan will be done at ghats from place to place and Ganga aarti will be performed. According to the Padmapuran legend, when the eternal Vishnu created the universe, the eternal Brahma washed his feet. A stream of water broke from the feet of Vishnu. This charanodak was filled by Brahma in his kamandal and it was called Ganga.

Since then the Ganges was flowing in Brahmaloka. For the salvation of his ancestors sixty thousand Sagarputras lying in the ashram of Kapil Muni, King Bhagirath of Ayodhya did penance and persuaded Ganga to come to Dhara Dham. To bear the velocity of the Ganges, Bhagirath again did penance and convinced Lord Shankar. Then the Ganges descended from Brahmaloka on the way to heaven in the hairs of Shiva. In Swati Nakshatra and Amrit Siddhi Yoga, all the yogas present at the time of the descent of Ganga on Saptami are happening today.

There are some other stories of Ganga birth as well. Quoting from Matsya and Vishnu Purana, Acharya Gyanbhushan Shukla tells that once Radhakrishna did Maharas in heaven. In this Raas Radha and Krishna became so absorbed that the water became Gangajal. He brought Ganga Bhagirath. Ganga has been called by many names like Janhu Putri, Vishnupadi, Nilavarna, Jatajutri, Maheshwari, Bhagirathi etc. Ganga has a thousand names and so many stories. Ganga has been a witness to the rise and rise of India. In India, 100% credit of Green Revolution is given to rivers like Ganga, Yamuna etc. On Sunday, there will be Gangotsav at all the pilgrimages of the country.
