Imran Khan’s party reached the United Nations against his own Pakistani government
With the removal of power, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has been continuously protesting against the government. Recently, he also took out the freedom march, but due to violence, he stopped this demonstration midway. Meanwhile, in a very surprising and unusual move, the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by Imran Khan reached the United Nations on Wednesday against its own government.
Letter written on human rights violation
In fact, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has sought the help of the United Nations for an independent and fair investigation and said that the excesses and human rights violations took place during a protest by the government last week. Senior PTI leader and Human Rights Minister in Imran Khan’s government Shireen Mazari, in a letter to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, alleged that the government used force against the protesters and also initiated politically motivated cases against the party leadership.
Serious allegations against Pakistani government
The letter by PTI comes after Imran Khan’s supporters violently protested in Islamabad on May 25 demanding that the government announce early elections and the police had to resort to tear gas and lathi-charge to keep them under control. . Mazari urged the UN official to pay immediate attention to the issues raised and alleged that the government not only put democracy in Pakistan at risk but also the lives of former Prime Minister Khan and his party’s leadership.
Urge to stop censorship of media
He accused the government of committing excesses against PTI workers during the crackdown. He sought the intervention of the United Nations to end the harassment of PTI members and to protect them from political cases against them. Mazari also demanded that the government stop censorship of the media, which he said violated basic democratic norms and the ICCPR.
Mazari’s letter comes a day after Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif set up a committee to probe whether PTI protesters were in possession of weapons during the protest. Earlier, former prime minister Khan had said in an interview that he had decided to call off the protests as some protesters carried guns and feared clashes and violence.
