After being pulled out of a 65 feet deep borewell, the child was examined by the doctors present on the spot and then he was sent to Apollo Hospital in Bilaspur district through an ambulance under the supervision of expert doctors. For this, about 100 km long green corridor has been made. Over 500 personnel, including officials of the NDRF, Army, local police and administration, were involved in the massive rescue operation that began on Friday evening.
11-year-old boy Rahul Sahu had fallen into an open borewell near his house in Pihrid village of Malkharoda block under the district. He was trapped at a depth of about 65 feet. It happened suddenly on June 10 at around 2 pm. As soon as the news of this incident was received, the district administration team was deployed under the leadership of Collector Jitendra Kumar Shukla. In time, the oxygen pipeline was arranged and delivered to the child. Along with keeping an eye on the child’s activities by installing a camera, his morale was being boosted by keeping an eye on Rahul trapped in the borewell through his family members.
Juice and bananaskeep delivering
Juice, bananas and other food items were also being delivered to the child. Oxygen was also being supplied with special cameras to monitor moment by moment. Emergency medical arrangements and ambulances were also deployed. Apart from the state disaster management team, the National Disaster Management (NDRF) team was involved in the rescue after coming from Cuttack and Bhilai in Odisha. Army Colonel Chinmoy Pareek was engaged in this mission with his team. Every effort was made to get the child out of the rescue safely.
Rahul was unable to hold the rope
On the first day of the country’s biggest rescue, on the night of June 10, an attempt was made to bring Rahul out of the rope through a manual crane. After Rahul did not give any response like grabbing the rope, after the consent of the family members and the decision of the NDRF, it was decided that the rescue should be done by digging till the edge of the borewell. Excavation was started again with different machines from around 12 o’clock in the night. After excavation of about 65 feet, the first way was prepared.
Rock barrier
The district administration team along with the NDRF and the army made a tunnel to reach the borewell by drilling. Many times during the tunneling of the tunnel, this operation was hampered due to the strong rock coming. After the drilling machine of higher capacity was called from Bilaspur, Rahul was reached with a lot of effort, taking great precautions.
100 km long green corridor
Finally, after all the efforts, Rahul was rescued by the Army, NDRF personnel late on Tuesday night. On the spot, the doctors conducted a health check-up of the child and for better treatment, a 100 km long green corridor was made and taken to Apollo Hospital.

Was not an easy task
The collector said that due to being trapped in the borewell, the rescue of the child was not a very easy task. Everyone was trying to get him out safely. Whatever was possible due to adverse circumstances, those decisions were taken together with NDRF and family members. The Collector has appealed to the common citizens including the district officials not to keep the borewell open at any place so that such incidents do not recur. Never let your small children go to such places and keep your children under supervision yourself.
