Supreme Court gave clean chit to Narendra Modi in Gujarat riots, 300 lawyers and dignitaries wrote to CJI

The country’s Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed against a SIT report related to the 2002 Gujarat riots. This petition was filed by Zakia Jafri, wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri. More than 300 lawyers and activists have written to the Chief Justice of India after the Supreme Court dismissed the petition.
In the letter, the CJI has been asked to suo motu clear that there will be no adverse consequence of Zakia Jafri’s decision. Let us inform that in the dismissed petition of Zakia Jafri, the closure report of the SIT on the Gujarat riots was challenged. In this closure report, 63 other officials including the then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi got a clean chit. The Supreme Court has upheld the report.
At the same time, in a letter to the Chief Justice, lawyers and activists have expressed concern over the arrest of Teesta Setalvad, former ADGP RB Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt. The letter said that Zakia Jafri justifies the arrest on the basis of the Supreme Court’s decision on June 24, 2022, in the case. On this we should express our pain.
The letter states that before taking any action against a person proper notice has to be given, after which action can be initiated. But the court has not issued any notice of perjury and contempt and has not given any warning to anyone in this regard.
The way in which the proceedings have been conducted, it appears that if any petitioner or witness approaches the court, the danger of going to jail in case the petition is rejected, the letter said. Referring to the Emergency, the letter said that even during the Emergency, the Supreme Court had not sent such people to jail, who sought to follow the legal procedures.
Let us inform that in this letter, Senior Advocate Indira Jai Singh, Advocate Sanjay Hegde, Anas Tanveer, Fuzail Ahmed Ayyubi along with Senior Advocate Chandra Udai Singh, Anand Grover, Avani Bansal and Indian historian Ramchandra Guha are signed by many others.
