‘No film on Aryabhatta, he made a movie on Mughals’: R Madhavan, director of the film ‘Rocketry’ – no one knows the contribution of Nambi

R Madhavan’s film Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is rocking the box office. Released on July 1, 2022, the film is getting positive response across the country. Playing the lead character in the film, R Madhavan plays the role of Nambi Narayanan, the former head of cryogenics of ISRO. Let us inform that in 1994, during the Congress era, Nambi Narayanan was falsely accused of espionage, after which he was arrested. But four years later, the Supreme Court had quashed all the charges against him.

At the same time, apart from acting, R Madhavan has also ventured into writing and direction in the industry with this film. Madhavan has played the role of scientist Nambi Narayan in this. Madhavan has a long conversation about this film. In which he has also commented on the style of film making in Bollywood.

Talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Madhavan calls this film his national duty. Talking about Madhavan says, “It is a national duty to make such films and films like Nambi Narayan. However, this thought did not come before the making of the film. That’s because I was just about to act in it. I came very late for the work of directing the film. I did research on Nambi Narayan and learned that his story should be known to the world.

On further talks of making the film in multiple languages, Madhavan replied, “People may not know, but Nambi Narayan is more popular in France than in India. There the language of his communication was English. In such a situation, if I had made this film only in Tamil and English, then it would have been a kind of manipulation. So we made it in three languages Hindi, English and Tamil.

Madhavan adds proudly, “The story of the patriots who fought on the border is known to all. There are patriots among us who risk their lives every day. Knowing that no one will ever write about them. Nambi Narayan is likewise an unsung hero.”

At the same time, in an interview given to the Free Press Journal, when Madhavan is asked the question, do you think Indian cinema has not yet discovered the aerospace genre?

Responding to this question, Madhavan said, “Indian filmmakers will not come with that kind of background to make films in such a specific genre. It’s not about the budget at all. If you come from Raj Kapoor family or Satyajit Ray family, then you are making these kind of films. Nobody wanted to make a film on Aryabhatta. Instead, he created the Mughal-e-Azam, and there is nothing wrong with that. Storytellers do not have a scientific bent in India, which has created a huge gap. When I entered films, many people asked me that if I am an engineer then why am I becoming an actor? Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is just the beginning.”

Why did Madhavan choose to make a film on Nambi Narayan? Talking on this, he said that no one knows much about Nambi Narayan’s contribution to India’s progress in space. It is known that just the controversy related to him that he had an affair and he leaked the secret things of India to the enemy country. Whereas India’s rockets are launched because of their engines. So I decided to make a film on him.

Another special feature of the film is that the film does not just glorify Nambi Narayan. Rather, R Madhavan also emphasizes on Nambi Narayan’s flaws, saying, “Until the audience does not tell about his flaws, his achievements are not understood by the people. I myself could not understand that millions of mega-budget films in Bollywood have been made on Mughals and others, but our Bollywood has stayed away on the subject of science and scientists. People are happy when Hollywood people make ‘Interstellar’ based on science etc.

At the same time, on the question of Nambi Narayan’s interference in the film, Madhavan says that Nambi Narayan himself did not live on the sets. Even if you live, it is only because the science part is shot properly. Madhavan has denied any unnecessary interference by Nambi Narayan in the film.
