Mairaj Khan of UP created history in Shooting World Cup, won gold, Team India topped the medal table

India’s legendary shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan created history in Changwon on Monday. He won the country’s first gold medal in the men’s skeet event at the ISSF Shooting World Cup. The 46-year-old Mairaj of Uttar Pradesh scored a scintillating 37 in the 40-shot final event to beat Korea’s Minsu Kim and Britain’s Ben Llewellyn.

Minsu won the silver with a score of 36 and Ben won the bronze with a score of 26. Mairaj, a two-time Olympian, is the oldest member of the Indian contingent at this year’s ISSF World Cup. He has also won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Shooting World Cup.

Earlier on Monday itself, the trio of Anjum Moudgil, Ashi Chouksey and Sift Kaur Samra won the bronze medal in the women’s 50m rifle three positions team event. The trio defeated Austria’s Schlein Weibel, Nadine Ungerrank and Rebecca Koeck 16–6 in a third-place match.

Anjum had also won a bronze medal in the 50m rifle three position women’s singles event on Sunday. With this medal, Anjum also became the world’s number one shooter in the 50m rifle three positions. Talking about the medal tally, India is still on top with 13 medals. India has so far won five gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
