Sri Lankan army in action after President’s swearing in, demolished the camps of the agitators

Ranil Wickremesinghe took the oath of office on Thursday amid a long-running political crisis in Sri Lanka. Here, after the new President was sworn in, hundreds of Sri Lankan soldiers and police raided the main Anti-National Government Camp. According to AFP, in the early hours of Friday, police and army personnel arrived among the unarmed agitators and started removing the tents. From the month of April, the soldiers who arrived a few hours before the Presidential Secretariat to vacate the places of the agitators sitting outside, demolished all the tents.
Armed soldiers rushed to the spot and started removing barricades put up by the agitators at the main gate of the Presidential Secretariat, which they had put up during a protest earlier this month. Significantly, after Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as President, the agitators had already announced that they would vacate the area by Friday afternoon.
Witnesses saw soldiers around the seafront office, clearing temporary camps of thousands of anti-government protesters who had been there since April, which were being used to store essentials. In an announcement, security forces asked hundreds of protesters to retreat and confine themselves to a designated area near the secretariat.
Many activists were taken into custody by the soldiers. Along with this, the tents built on the side of the main road leading to the President’s office were demolished. Let us tell you that supporters of the #GoHomeGota campaign forced President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down. They captured Rajapaksa’s residence on 9 July, after which, they had to flee. Eventually had to resign.
