Muslim organizations will open 13 new colleges in Karnataka, wearing hijab will not be banned

Ahead of the assembly elections in Karnataka, the issue of wearing hijab in educational institutions has started rising again. Muslim organizations of southern districts of Karnataka are preparing to open 13 new PG colleges. Muslim organizations have applied for permission to open 13 new private colleges. According to media reports, there will be no restriction on wearing hijab in these colleges. Earlier on January 1, 2022, the Hijab controversy started in Udupi, Karnataka, which gradually reached the entire country, after which the matter reached the Karnataka High Court.

According to media reports, no such applications were made by any of these minority organizations in the last 5 years. At the same time, due to the arrival of such applications, the hijab controversy may increase once again in the state as there is a ban on wearing hijab in all government educational institutions of the state. Although private educational institutions have been given freedom to decide their own dress code, so Muslim organizations have taken this decision.

Freedom to fix dress code in private educational institutions
In Karnataka, the previous Congress government of the state had made the dress code mandatory in all government educational institutions. However, exemption was given to private educational institutions in this. At the same time, religious symbols have been banned in all government educational institutions in the state, but private educational institutions can give relaxation in wearing hijab according to their own.

An application approved
A senior official of the Karnataka Education Department said that applications for opening new PG colleges in the state are being scrutinized, only one application has been approved. Along with this, he told that if the applications for opening new colleges meet all the criteria then they can be approved.

Supreme Court refused to hear
A petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court seeking permission to wear the hijab in all government educational institutions, which was rejected by the High Court. After this this petition was filed in the Supreme Court and then the Supreme Court refused to hear this petition.
