Pelosi is the first Speaker of the US House of Representatives to visit Taiwan in the past 25 years. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, announced several military exercises around the island and issued several strong statements.

China warned on Tuesday that US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, despite her warnings, would have a “serious impact” on bilateral ties as it “seriously undermines” peace and stability in the region. Its state media said the army would conduct “targeted” operations to counter his visit. China lodged a protest at the diplomatic level, saying Pelosi’s visit violates the “one China principle”. Earlier on Wednesday, Pelosi said the US delegation visiting Taiwan was sending a message that the US would not back down from its commitments to the self-governing island.
