The government withdrew the data protection bill giving big rights to internet users

The Central Government has withdrawn the Personal Data Protection Bill 2021. The bill was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee. The committee had suggested 81 amendments to this bill. It has been withdrawn to consider the recommendations on such a large scale. The central government has said that it is being withdrawn to consider such a large number of changes. This would require extensive legal consultations. After this the bill will be introduced afresh.

According to government sources, considering the report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, a comprehensive legal framework is being worked out, which will clear the way for the new bill.

The bill was sent to the panel in 2019 after facing opposition from the opposition Congress and Trinamool Congress. The opposition had said that the data privacy law violates the fundamental rights of citizens. Opposition parties had said that this law, brought citing national security and other reasons, has given the government wide rights to access personal data of people.

The law would reportedly require large social media platforms to have an identity-verification option. This requirement is likely to raise a number of technical and policy issues with companies including Facebook and its WhatsApp and Instagram unit, Twitter. There are millions of users in India on these social media platforms.

Personal data protection bill was eagerly awaited by top technology companies and industrialists as it could change the way all major internet companies collect, store and transfer data of Indian consumers.
