Wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the Nordic system

Indian wrestlers won 12 medals, including six gold, in the Commonwealth Games 2022. During this, Vinesh Phogat also won the gold medal in the 53 kg weight category. This is Vinesh’s third consecutive gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. Prior to this, she won Glasgow (2014)  And also won gold medal in Gold Coast (2108) Games.

The special thing is that Vinesh Phogat won on the basis of Nordic system.  Vinesh registered a 2-0 win by-fall in just 36 seconds against World Championship bronze medalist Canadian wrestler Samantha Lee Stewart in the first match.  Vinesh then defeated Nigeria’s Mercy Bolafunoluwa Adekuoroa 6-0 in her second match.  In her third match, Vinesh defeated Sri Lanka’s Keshni Maduravalge 5-0 via by-fall.

What is the Nordic System?

According to United World Wrestling, the Nordic system is used in wrestling when there are less than 6 wrestlers in a weight category. In this case, each wrestler competes against each other. In this, the wrestlers with the most wins are awarded on that basis.  Ranking is given.In this system one gold, one silver and one bronze medal are awarded.

The special thing is that there is no provision of rape round in this.  The wrestler with the most wins in the Nordic system takes first place.  If two players are on the same number of points after all matches, regardless of their classification points, a match is made between them and the winner is declared.

Canadian wrestler got silver

Vinesh Phogat had four wrestlers in the 53 kg weight category, in which Vinesh won the gold medal by winning all three matches.  Samantha Lee Stewart took the silver with two wins and Adekuoroi took the bronze with one win.  Sri Lanka’s Keshni Maduravalge lost all three matches and finished fourth.
